Top tips to beat the summer heat

Summer is bringing the heat this week, with temperatures expected to soar!

Luckily, we are sharing our top tips to beat the heat so the Lake Mac community can stay cool and safe. Council recommends taking these simple precautions to ensure you stay healthy in the extreme hot weather this week.

Drink plenty of water

This advice may seem simple, but staying hydrated is crucial when it comes to having fun in the sun. During extremely hot weather, it is easy to become dehydrated or for your body to overheat. Ensure you are drinking plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty.

Helpful tip: if your urine is pale, this is an indication that you are drinking enough water. Check out NSW Health’s urine colour chart to ensure you are staying hydrated this summer.

Keep your body cool

Drink cold beverages and eat smaller cold meals such as salads and fruit to help your body keep cool. Wearing light, loose fitting clothes, seeking shade and taking cool showers are also helpful.

Keep your home cool

Try to maintain a cool temperature indoors by keeping your windows closed with the blinds and curtains shut. Use fans and air-conditioning if possible or if not, seek cool spots such as visting a Lake Mac Swim Centre, one of our Lake Mac Libraries, a local shopping centre or cinema.

Take care of others

Having fun in the sun can be dangerous when not managed properly, so make sure you and those around you are coping with the heat. Be sure to check on people that may be particularly at risk in the heat such as young children and the elderly. Keep a close eye on friends, family and neighbours too.

Recognise the symptoms

If you see someone struggling in the heat, make sure you understand the symptoms of heat-related illness. Symptoms of heat stress include extremely heavy sweating, headache and vomiting, confusion and a swollen tongue. Should someone experience heat stress, be sure to seek medical assistance.

Look after your pets

Make sure your pets have plenty of shade and enough cool water to last the entire day. Putting ice cubes in their bowl is a great way to help keep their water cool for longer. Check on them regularly and if they are not coping, consider letting them inside until the temperatures cool.

Rest regularly

If you are unable to stay indoors, make sure you are resting regularly to avoid exhaustion. Avoid strenuous activity, be sun safe and seek shade where possible.

Have a plan

Heatwaves can be extremely dangerous so it is essential to have a plan in place. Adequate preparation may include having plenty of water bottles on hand, making sure there is a first aid kit nearby should someone become unwell and being alert for any announcements regarding immediate dangers such as bushfires.
