West Wallsend Swim Centre will be expanded to include a new learn to swim pool, while the centre's power will be upgraded.

Background

It comes as rapid residential growth in and around West Wallsend and Cameron Park causes an increase in demand for the existing 25m pool. The project also aligns with Councils adopted Aquatic facilities Strategy which identifies the expansion of the swim centre as a high priority action.

The $1.7 million project is funded by the Australian Government through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exactly where will the new swim centre be built?

The learn to swim pool will likely be housed in an extension off the current facility. Staff are currently undertaking early site planning and investigations to determine the most suitable location.

Will the existing pool shut to cater for construction?

While there may be some short-term closures for specific activities, these will be communicated to the public well in advance. Council will work to ensure disruptions to the existing centre remain at a minimum during the construction phase. To stay up to date, head to swim.lakemac.com.au.

What ages will the learn to swim pool cater to?

While the design of the centre is still being finalised, it's hoped to be very similar to Charlestown's learn to swim pool which caters to children from six months of age upwards.

Will the upgrades include a splash-pad?

While the investigations and concept planning will include a location for a splash pad, Council will have to seek additional funding to be able to build the feature in the future.
