Walking and cycling projects

Lake Macquarie City offers cycling enthusiasts and pedestrians a variety of paths and routes to explore. Our shared pathways run through areas of natural beauty, including lakeside and forest environments, and are connected in places by on road access links.

The Walking, Cycling and Better Streets Strategy(PDF, 20MB) was adopted in 2021, with a vision to create a more connected City and to embed a culture of walking and cycling within the community. It guides Council in prioritising future infrastructure to create safer, more enjoyable and convenient experiences.

A full list of Lake Macquarie shared pathways is available in our fold-out cycling map and online cycling map.

Northlakes Way – West Wallsend to Glendale via Cameron Park, Edgeworth

Our Walking, Cycling and Better Streets Strategy identifies a cycling route extending from West Wallsend to Glendale via Cameron Park and Edgeworth.

Status: Parts of this route have been built in West Wallsend and Cameron Park as part of residential development projects. The route includes a connection to Cameron Park.

Stage 1 - works are underway to link Springvale Circuit to Pasterfield Oval over Cocked Hat Creek. Construction on the bridge over Cocked Hat Creek is underway, with the project expected to be complete by December 2024. The bridge will be closed during construction.

Stage 2 will connect the path at Springvale Circuit to the existing shared path network in the north. Construction is expected to start in January 2025 and take four months to complete.  The new 430m path will connect to existing pathways, creating a 4km track from Cameron Park to Pasterfield Sport Complex. In future years, Council will plan and design the missing sections between Cameron Park and Glendale via Edgeworth.

Richmond Vale Rail Trail

The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is a proposed 32-kilometre cycling and walking track along the former Richmond Vale rail line between Kurri Kurri and Hexham, along the former Chichester to Newcastle water pipeline between Shortland and Tarro, and through the Hunter Wetlands National Park.

The rail will traverse through several local government areas, including Cessnock, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
