When will construction start?

Construction on the revitalised Awaba House is underway as of July 2024 and is expected to open to the public in late 2025.

Will Awaba House be rebuilt as it was?

The historically significant facade will be retained while changes to the internal layout to accommodate a modern restaurant and function space. Heritage elements of the original building feature throughout the design and materials of the revitalised building. The building will also feature a new terrace to the east providing sheltered outdoor seating, where diners will be able to soak up the stunning lakeside vistas.

How did Council consult the community during the design process?

The preferred concept design was developed based on community consultation undertaken in 2020. Council ran three phases of community consultation to gather feedback to inform the concept design for the future of Awaba House. As part of the consultation process, a Community Reference Group was formed to provide advice and guidance to help inform the design brief.

How was Heritage NSW involved in the design phase?

Council worked closely with Heritage consultants to maintain the buildings rich history in the design phase. Heritage NSW will also be updated and consulted with throughout the construction process as per Heritage Council of NSW requirements.

Has there been any changes to the project timeline?

Due to increasing construction costs and the complex nature of retaining heritage elements, the Awaba House revitalisation project experienced delays throughout the design and approvals phase. As a result of higher than anticipated tender price in early 2024, Council approved the reallocation of additional funds, keeping the delivery of the project as a priority for Council. Construction is now underway and due to be complete in late 2025.

Will the roofline be different to the original?

We engaged architectural and cultural heritage consultants to complete the detailed design, which resulted in a flat roof. This conceals essential services while making it safer and easier for maintenance works to go ahead. While the new roof will look a little different, the newer materials will aim to complement the original design. The structure will retain the chimney, windows and significant external walls.

Can I still access MAC and Three Bears Cafe during construction?

Yes, maintaining accessibility to the Museum of Art and Culture yapang and Three Bears Cafe remains a priority for us. To stay up to date, and view the access map head to mac.lakemac.com.au

How did the fire start at Awaba House?

Fire and Rescue NSW attended Awaba House on Tuesday 20 August 2019. Following thorough investigations, Fire and Rescue NSW believe the fire may have started in the roof cavity of the building; however, advised the cause of the fire was ‘undetermined’ due to the scale of damage to the roof of the building. There were no suspicious circumstances.
