Diversity, Equity and Belonging
Here at Lake Mac, our vision is to build a culture where we celebrate the diversity in our workforce and community and encourage our employees to bring their whole self to work and feel connected to our organisation and city. Our goal is to create a workforce that reflects the community we serve.
What is Diversity, Equity and Belonging at Lake Mac?
Lake Mac values diversity, equity and belonging and acknowledges it is a complex, changing concept. To understand and fully communicate this concept the Lake Mac Diversity Wheel has been created to represent the multilayered complexity.
Our Diversity, Equity and Belonging Strategy 2023 - 2025 focuses on building our culture for all. We need to address diversity, equity and belonging at all levels- individual, team, leader and our systems and processes.

Disability Confident Recruiters
In 2024, Council was recognised as Disability Confident Recruiters through Australian Disability Network as we have the ability to provide an inclusive, accessible recruitment experience. We live our values in how we work together, striving to achieve a respectful, safe and inclusive workplace where everyone’s diverse contributions and cultures are valued.
As a candidate, it means a simplified application process with access to fair and confidential support when required. You can apply for roles more easily, have confidence that you will be treated fairly during the assessment process, and be provided with ongoing support from submitting an application to becoming a Lake Mac employee.
If you require an adjustment to the recruitment process, it’s important to let us know what you specifically need as we recognise adjustments will be different for everyone. It’s also important to note that you will not be disadvantaged if you ask for an adjustment when applying for a role. Any personal information about your disability or needs that you share during the application process will only be used to provide adjustments you may need during the recruitment process. Find out more and contact our Talent Acquisition Team on 02 4921 0333 or email [email protected].
Veteran Employment Program
We recognise the unique skills and attributes demonstrated by service personnel in their service to our country. These same skills and attributes are valued by Council in serving our local community.
We strongly encourage ex-service personnel to look at the many and varied opportunities available not only at Lake Macquarie City Council but within Local Government.
We appreciate that applying for roles outside of defence can be daunting. If you are unsure of where to start, or would like some support with the application process, please contact us at [email protected].
- Local Government Rank to Grade Guide was developed to help both hiring managers and veterans understand how Australian Defence Force (ADF) skills and experience align with public sector jobs. Use this guide as a tool to help you identify where your skills and qualifications align you to.
- Veteran Employment Program (VEP) is a communication and education platform that supports both veterans and hiring managers. VEP continues to build a network of champions and partners to help promote the skills veterans can bring to Local Government.
- Education NSW offers fee-free training for all veterans and their recognised partners. You can learn new skills and qualifications which will compliment your ADF skills and attributes to help you find the right job and have a rewarding civilian life. TAFE NSW Ranks to Recognition works in partnerships with NSW Office for Veterans Affairs to assist Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans and their spouses and partners to transition into the civilian workforce. Ranks to Recognition offers a wraparound service including careers advice, skills assessment, credit transfer, recognition of prior learning (RPL) and training gap analysis to help identify the skills and knowledge acquired in the ADF.
