Time to purge, Chemical CleanOut comes to Croudace Bay

Croudace Bay will enter the spring-cleaning fray on Saturday 31 August when Lake Macquarie City Council’s Chemical CleanOut arrives at the Thomas H Halton Park boat ramp.

Residents from across the Hunter are invited to bring their household problem waste along for safe disposal from 9am to 3.30pm on the day.

Household quantities of these waste items such as paint, smoke detectors, gas bottles, pool chemicals, cleaning products, batteries and more can be surrendered free of charge.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Waste Services Paul Collins said the event helped protect the environment, with the last CleanOut at Rathmines diverting 29 tonnes from landfill.

“The Chemical CleanOut helps us to mitigate the impact hazardous waste can have on our environment and waste management facilities,” he said.

“A large amount of the waste we collect at these events can be recycled, while other items are disposed of to stop them polluting our beautiful lake and waterways.”

Chemical CleanOut is a drive-through service run in collaboration with the NSW Environment Protection Authority and is open to all Hunter residents.

For safety reasons, no walk-ins are accepted.

To ensure waste is transported safely, it is recommended that containers with liquids are wrapped in newspaper and a plastic bag, then placed inside a bucket or tray, away from passengers.

Attendees are advised not to mix chemicals and, where possible, leave them in their original containers.

All containers must be sealed and labelled. If a waste product is not identified, it should be made known to the staff so the onsite chemist can test it.

Quantities of accepted waste are limited to 20kg by weight and 20L by volume for single items and up to 100L for paints (maximum 20L per container).

For safe traffic management, attendees are advised there will be no right turn from Bareki Road into the park, and only left turns exiting back on to Bareki Road will be permitted.

The boat ramp and car park will be closed from the evening of 30 August through to the conclusion of the event for traffic control purposes.

For those unable to attend this bi-annual event, the Community Recycling Centre at the Awaba Waste Management Facility accepts paint, motor oils, car batteries and gas bottles and a range of other problem household waste items free of charge every day of the year except Christmas Day.
