Starter gun poised for Hunter Sports Centre community open day

Visitors to Hunter Sports Centre, kaiyu nungkiliko, will get a first look at the site’s $52 million expansion at a free community open day this Saturday.
Held noon-3pm, the day will include guided tours, displays, fitness classes, sausage sizzle, roving entertainment and free coffee and gelato.
The open day follows the expansion’s official opening earlier this month, including the Australian-first Trampoline Centre of Excellence, a revamped gymnastics hall and a new three-level sport and community centre.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said Saturday’s activities marked the first opportunity for the community to see the state-of-the-art facilities first-hand.
“All three levels of government have come together to fund this world-class expansion,” he said.
“It has created a facility capable of holding national and international events – one that will create pathways for our future athletes to thrive and succeed.”
The expansion was jointly funded by Lake Macquarie City Council, the Australian Government through its Building Better Regions program, its Local Regional Infrastructure program and its Changing Places funding, and the NSW Government through its Centre of Excellence Fund, its Essential Community Sports Asset program and its Regional Sport Facility fund.
