Holiday hot-spots across Lake Mac will be treated to some extra TLC over the Christmas period to help deal with high visitor numbers and the increased demand for services.

Lake Macquarie City Council Section Manager City Presentation Jason Wilks said 42 of the most-used amenities blocks throughout the city would be serviced daily from Christmas until Australia Day, including toilets and change rooms at all four patrolled beaches.

Extra bins are being distributed this week at locations popular with holidaymakers, including Belmont Baths, Naru Beach, Pelican foreshore, Blacksmiths Beach, Catherine Hill Bay, Redhead Beach and Wangi Point Park.

“We’re planning ahead to keep on top of things, because this is by far our busiest time of year at many locations across Lake Mac,” Mr Wilks said.

“That includes putting on extra waste collections at busy sites during peak periods, and our City Presentation crews will also focus on surrounding areas to keep them looking good.”

Council’s lifeguards will extend their patrol hours to 6pm through to the end of the school holidays, based on visitation data showing a spike in beachgoers after the working day ends.

Team Leader Beach Lifeguards Lucas Samways said flags would stay up until 6pm except in bad weather where the beach was already empty.

And Council will once again engage traffic control contractors from Christmas Day to Australia Day at five of its busiest summer locations: Caves Beach, Naru Beach, Dudley Beach, Swansea boat ramp on Pirrita Island and Redhead Beach.

Mr Wilks said traffic control in place for the past two peak summer periods had helped stave off traffic headaches and minimised concerns about safety.

“We know how busy places like Redhead Beach can get on a hot day during the Christmas break, especially now with the new pump track open,” Mr Wilks said.

“Having traffic control measures – and overflow parking where available – in place before it gets to that point will hopefully nip any issues in the bud.”
