Secrets of creation laid bare in Open Studios experience
Published on 02 November 2023
Local artists and makers of all persuasions will throw their doors open for the public to explore their creative process this weekend as part of Lake Mac Open Studios.
Be it textiles, woodturning, fabrics, ceramics, sketching, painting or acrylics, there’s a kaleidoscopic array of artistic expression to explore, with more than 46 producers showcasing their wares and ways of working across 28 studio sites.
Faber-Castell Colour 4 Life 2021 award winner Hayley McLachlan will be among the exhibitors, after transforming her 90-year-old garage into a brand-new artistic haven in Morisset.
Specialising in coloured pencil, acrylic paint and oil paint works, Mrs McLachlan said she was looking forward to sharing spicks and specks of colourful wisdom with the community.
“My passion lies within wildlife art, and I look for subjects with emotion and great lighting,” she said.
“It’s great that Lake Mac Council is supporting the local creatives and artists with this fantastic opportunity; I feel so fortunate to be a part of this program.
“It’s such a great way for locals to get out and about to appreciate what local artists have to offer, and I'm really looking forward to sharing my art with the community and meeting other art lovers.”
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the program continued to expand its offerings, with hands-on activities and an eclectic roster of creators on board.
“Lake Macquarie Council is pleased to support the local arts community by facilitating Lake Mac Open Studios, and we urge the community to take advantage of this rare opportunity to meet local makers in person and purchase artisan handmade gifts for Christmas,” she said.
Studio visitors will be able to meet artists, learn more about their work and purchase pieces to take home.
Local artworks will also be on display in the ‘Off the Wall’ exhibition from 7 November to 10 December at the Museum of Art and Culture, MAC yapang, in Booragul.
The exhibition will feature 60 Hunter-based artists, and visitors will be able to purchase artworks directly off the gallery wall for Christmas presents or their own collections.
