One of Australia’s biggest environmental events is fast approaching, and Lake Macquarie City Council is inviting residents and community groups to get involved by registering a Clean Up Australia Day site for Sunday, 2 March.

Last year’s impressive turnout of more than 9000 volunteers collected seven tonnes of rubbish across 104 sites.

The Everingham family, Scott, Elle and their four-year-old son Toby, shared their excitement about participating this year with the Teralba Social Club.

“We take part in this to send a positive message to keep our city beautiful – we have a passion for it,” Mr Everingham said.

“We had nearly 100 people last year and collected quite a bit of rubbish.”

The club is registering a site at the Teralba Tennis Courts, where volunteers will gather to collect rubbish from the area surrounding the field and shared pathway.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz urged locals to get involved by volunteering individually or forming a group and registering a clean-up site.

“We're hoping to see a diverse range of sites across the entire city,” he said.

“We often have scuba divers cleaning Swansea Channel, kayakers gliding through our creeks and community groups gathering along our shores and in parks to keep our city beautiful and pristine.

“Last year we had 58 community and youth groups, 38 schools and eight businesses register, which was extremely pleasing.

"By everyone doing their bit, we can have a meaningful impact. Let’s all commit to better recycling practices and responsible waste disposal to keep our stunning landscape clean and thriving all year long."
