Join the fluoro-tilla and win big at Float Your Boat 2024

Council is calling for all hands on deck to enter a vessel in Float Your Boat 2024, with an inflated prize pool available for sailors in this year’s fluorescent fleet.

Three cash prizes will be offered in the People’s Choice category for the first time, with $1000 for the most popular light display, $600 for runner-up and $400 for third place.

First-time entrants making their maiden multi-colour voyage will go in the draw to win a two-night stay at Wangi Holiday Park, while boaties who refer a friend to take part can win a two-night stay at Sails Holiday Park.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser will pick her favourites in two boat size categories, five to 10 metres and 10m plus – which will each receive a prize of $400 as winners of ‘Mayor’s best boat’.

Cr Fraser said with so many prizes up for grabs there was no better time for sailors to dip their toes in the waters.

“Each year we see so many fabulous displays light up the lake, so it’s only fitting we acknowledge as many boaties as possible who go the extra mile with their artwork,” she said.

“I’m calling on every boat owner – from dinghy to catamaran – to consider coming aboard the crew of Lake Macquarie’s very own version of Vivid.”

Veteran Float Your Boat skipper Steve Upton and Empire Marina’s David Randall will host a light building workshop ahead of the event to help newcomers find their sparkling sea legs.

“Building a lighting display is really a lot of fun, and it’s always exciting to help bring people’s weird and wacky ideas to life,” Mr Randall said.

“There’s a great rapport and camaraderie amongst the boaties and we’re always keen to welcome new faces into the fold to take part in the fun.”

Boats must be a minimum of five metres and a maximum of 18m in length and be capable of a minimum six knots per hour.

Captains must be over the age of 16 and hold a current RMS boat license.
