How to sell stuff online
Published on 24 September 2023
What can I sell?
It’s best to only sell working items. Is the item in a condition that you would buy it in? Is it still in working order? Could somebody else use it? Or is it rare?
Choose a platform
Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace are the most popular for selling second hand items. It's free to create an account. facebook.com/marketplace or gumtree.com.au
How to create a great advert
PHOTOS: Take plenty of photos of the item. Include the front, back, details, any labels or branding information, wear and tear. Use the best picture as the first listing photo.
TITLE: Use keywords that people would search for when buying an item.
DESCRIPTION: Get specific. Include make, model, year, brand, colour, size, price fabric, inclusions. Take measurements. Detail any faults or features.
LOCATION: Include your suburb so people know if you are close enough to collect from.
Respond to enquiries
Send messages through the platform not your email. Only give you’re address AFTER you've got an interested buyer who wants to look or buy. Be clear on when and where you are available Respond to each enquiry, if possible. Keep the listing up to date e.g. Pending/Sold.
Accepting payments safely
Don't give out your bank details. Cash is the most secure option but have change on hand. Have a friend or family member with you when you make the trans action. Ask people to bring a friend to lift heavy items if required.
Become a trusted seller
Two-way rating exists for buyers and sellers. Leave a review for your buyer and ask them to rate you as a seller. A kind word goes a long way.
