Fern Martins’ passion for highlighting political, cultural and spiritual journeys through art spans more than 50 years, with her masterpieces featuring in exhibits across the globe – including Europe and the United States.

This weekend, the Waka Waka woman will welcome community members into her studio, allowing visitors to have an intimate look at some of her greatest creations.

Ms Martins is one of almost 35 local artists taking part in Lake Macquarie City Council’s Lake Mac Open Studios event, which runs across Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June 2022.

“I am very grateful for this event because I get to sit down and talk to people about what they like about my work – it’s a great opportunity,” Ms Martins said.

“I have moved through different periods of my life; some of my earlier work was very politically motivated – particularly in the 80s when we were trying to support the Aboriginal Land Councils and the very early treaty movement.

“It’s been quite a varied career as an artist and addressing all those complexities to do with the journey of life, making sure that the injustices are highlighted and moving forward to reconciliation and forgiveness.”

Lake Macquarie City Council Major Creative Projects Innovation Coordinator Joanne Smith said Open Studios allows artists and makers across Lake Macquarie to throw open their doors and invite community members inside for a behind-the-scenes look.

“The event gives art lovers the chance to meet artists, take part in creative workshops and purchase unique artworks to take home,” Ms Smith said.

Artist Sean Bell said he would welcome visitors into his Cardiff studio for the event.

“I think the biggest satisfaction is when you are showcasing your work and people are engaging with it and interpreting it in their own way,” Mr Bell said.

“That’s quite a surreal feeling and such a thrill.”

Art enthusiasts can visit the studios from 10am-4pm this Saturday and Sunday.

Experimental drawing, watercolour painting, and mosaic-making workshops will also be held over the two-day event.

The event forms part of the Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival – a month-long series of events honouring local artist Sir Williams Dobell.
