Fun in the sun is the name of the game this summer school holidays, with a raft of family friendly activities on offer across Lake Macquarie.

There’s plenty of ways to enjoy the water throughout the festive season, including learn to swim, sail, stand up paddle board and kayak classes on the lake and at swim centres.

Families can ‘Explore our Great Outdoors’ with a school holiday program including nature treasure trails, rockpool rambles, cultural bush tucker tours, bird-watching, fun with fungi, seagrass saunters and more.

Kids can unleash their creative spirits with Lego building at libraries, skateboard ‘deck-orating’, holiday print workshops and sand sculpting.

There’s also print workshops and under-fives art-making at the Multi-Arts Pavilion (MAP), mima in Speers Point Park running alongside WildLife, a 360-degree immersive animation by graphic storyteller James Price.

Lake Arts Precinct Art Producer Martina Mrongovius said the exhibit was a fun way for people of all ages to engage with their feelings.

WildLife presents a series of cartoon-like emotional worlds that kids can explore and respond to in our hands-on art-making workshops,” she said.

The Confident Kids program will be in full swing, helping young people develop resilience by exploring local trails around Lake Macquarie.

Community Planner Children and Families Erin Pascall said the program supported parents, carers and their children, aged five to nine, on a journey to build resilient foundations for life.

“Natural spaces provide a tranquil backdrop for challenging conversations,” she said.

“Tackling the challenge of trails as a family provides ample opportunities to engage in supportive communication strategies and positive self-talk.”

Family Trails is funded under the NSW Government’s Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery initiative and developed by the Lake Macquarie City Council.
