Crowds flock to Lake Mac’s Special Entertainment Precinct

Wangi Wangi’s Special Entertainment Precinct has been hailed a success, with local businesses pushing to ramp up live music and entertainment events in April and beyond.
Hundreds of patrons packed pubs, clubs and other entertainment venues from 1-24 April, during an event series called Wangi Live.
The pilot program was run in partnership with the NSW government and aimed to boost live music and performance after two challenging years brought on by COVID-19.
Hotel Wangi owner Peter Coyne was one of six local operators taking part in the program and hosted numerous gigs and a comedy night, allowing more than a dozen creatives to take centre stage.
“Hotel Wangi has been operating for more than 25 years, and we have never seen a month as busy as this,” Mr Coyne said.
“We discovered there is a market for these night-time events, so we will continue to host more live music.”
The pilot program comprised 30 events, including live music gigs, a comedy night, art workshops and family-friendly activities.
Lake Macquarie Deputy Mayor Jason Pauling said businesses, residents and local authorities were pleased with the outcome.
“We’re thrilled to deliver such a successful program, which saw zero noise complaints reported to local authorities,” Cr Pauling said.
“The program has proven how much Wangi Wangi’s night-time economy can thrive, and we hope it will help boost visitor numbers long-term.”
Artist Helene Ruma hosted a workshop called ‘Paint a Pooch’ at the Wangi Library Creative Hub.
“The event was sold out and there was a waiting list as well, so it was a great success for creatives and the town of Wangi,” Ms Ruma said.
“People really enjoyed themselves and it was a great way for people to get into acrylic paint.”
Lake Macquarie was one of three NSW councils selected to run the program.
Lake Macquarie City Council will relay the program’s outcome to the NSW Government.
