Council kicks off inclusive series with Play Well sport events

The newly expanded Hunter Sports Centre, Kaiyu Nungkiliko, will host come and try sport days, called Play Well, offering children and adults with disability an opportunity to participate in sporting activities in a fun, inclusive and welcoming environment.
The official opening event for the series kicks off today, Tuesday 15 April, with five more events to follow featuring gymnastics, trampolining and athletics.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Jacqui Hemsley said the events were designed in consultation with the Hunter Sports Centre team, Inclusive Sport Academy and Gymnastics NSW.
“Participation in sport fosters community connection, promotes social inclusion and contributes to improved health and wellbeing,” she said.
“With 15,300 people needing daily assistance with core activities in Lake Macquarie, it’s important that we provide opportunities to engage in physical activity, build confidence and feel a sense of belonging within the community.”
The opening event at 3:30pm Tuesday 15 April features athletics and gymnastics for all ages, alongside stalls and refreshments.
“Upcoming events in the series will introduce participants to trampolining in the new Trampoline Centre of Excellence, as well as ongoing opportunities to explore gymnastics and athletics,” Ms Hemsley said.
“Each session is led by qualified coaches using inclusive equipment and adaptive techniques to ensure everyone feels welcome and supported.”
Hunter Sports Centre, Kaiyu Nungkiliko Acting General Manager Michelle Preston-Poole said the newly expanded facility was designed to be inclusive.
“These events are a great example of how sport can bring communities together,” she said.
“We see Play Well as more than just a community event – it’s also an opportunity to develop our staff and programs to be more inclusive and accessible.”
“Our coaches and team members are undertaking specialised training in inclusive sport delivery, ensuring every participant feels safe, supported and celebrated.”
