Are you emergency ready this winter?

Lake Macquarie City Council is urging residents to be FloodSmart this winter with a new online hub to help prepare for floods.
It’s a timely reminder on the 16th anniversary of the Pasha Bulker storm and floods, which left the region with a clean-up bill of $1.35 billion.
Manager Environmental Systems Karen Partington said the flood crisis would worsen due to climate change, with increasing rainfall intensities and sea-level rises predicted over the coming years.
“With more people impacted by adverse weather events, taking the time to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared can make a world of difference during emergencies,” she said.
There are more than 19,000 flood-prone properties in Lake Macquarie.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Fraser said the new online hub gave residents the knowledge and resources to help keep them safe heading into winter.
“We’re lucky to enjoy being surrounded by the beautiful lake and all of its waterways, but our unique landscape also makes it important for our community to be prepared for flood events,” she said.
