Winner of the 2024 Outstanding Contributor with Disability of the Year

Susanne has worn many hats in the community over the years, from serving as a chaplain at five nursing homes to being a board member at Macquarie Care and more. As the operations manager for Manna House, Susanne helps deliver over 4,000 food hampers each year to those in need – a service that continued through the pandemic and continues today. Diagnosed as profoundly deaf in 2006, Susanne has not let anything stand in her way, working tirelessly to ensure no community or individual is left behind.

We asked Sue a few questions about her passion for Lake Macquarie.

Why do you love doing what you do in Lake Macquarie?

I have always been actively involved in Lake Macquarie, whether through work or volunteering. My engagements have spanned various roles including teaching, chaplaincy and community work. I find immense joy in connecting with the people of our community, listening to their stories and sharing in their life experiences. This deep passion for humanity fuels my commitment to advocating against injustices within our communities.

What drew you to Lake Macquarie and how has your experience been living here?

My roots trace back to Western Suburbs Maternity Hospital (formerly in Waratah), where I came into this world. Both my parents contributed to the fabric of our community; my mother served as a Baby Health Centre sister, while my father worked as a paramedic at BHP. Our family called Belmont North home during those formative years.

Why do you love living in Lake Macquarie?

The allure of Lake Macquarie extends far beyond its picturesque landscapes; it's a place I proudly call home. From its natural beauty to its vibrant lifestyle, from the strong sense of community to the abundance of recreational spaces like playgrounds, Lake Macquarie caters to families and generations alike. Its proximity to the Hunter, Nelson Bay and Sydney adds to its appeal, making it an ideal location to reside.
