Winner of the 2024 Lake Mac Young Citizen of the Year

Leukemia survivor Sophie Berude is continuing her philanthropic journey after being named 2023 Lake Mac Young Citizen.

She celebrated her 'cured-day' by launching the "Joy Campaign" for John Hunter Children's Hospital, contributing over $2000 in gifts, adding to her cumulative $40,000 donations.

As a key participant in Redkite's national fundraising, Sophie spearheaded their Christmas and 'Crunch for Kids' campaigns, featured in various promotional materials and raised personal funds.

Acknowledging her seven-year commitment to the cause, Redkite's CEO nominated her for the NSW Women of the Year awards where she was recognised as ‘one to watch’.

We asked Sophie a few questions about her passion for Lake Macquarie.

Why do you love volunteering and helping others in Lake Macquarie?

I like helping others, especially kids, because I know what it’s like to spend a lot of time in the hospital. I like cheering them up and bringing some joy to their days.

What do you love most about living in Lake Macquarie?

I love that we have absolutely everything you could want here, from our beautiful lakes and beaches to great shopping! We’re close enough to Sydney to visit when we want to. I also think we’re very lucky to have such a great hospital nearby. Most kids with cancer have to travel a very long way for treatment, but fortunately, I didn’t have to because the John Hunter Hospital is in our neighbouring area.

What are some hidden gems or lesser-known perks about living in Lake Macquarie that you think more people should know about?

I really love the walking tracks in Green Point Reserve. The lake views are amazing! I feel so lucky to live in Valentine. My mum says it’s like living in a small country town, but with the perks of a big city!
