Winner of the 2024 Lake Mac Ambassador

Matt, a third-generation pilot, has led a life in aviation marked by intense military combat, multiple near-death experiences, and recognition in the fastest motorsport on the planet.

As a wingman for his father from a young age, Matt accomplished his first solo flight at 15 in a glider, later earning his aircraft pilot’s licence at 18.

A former Top Gun fighter pilot and retired Wing Commander in the Royal Australian Air Force, Matt is a combat veteran of Iraq, with medals from both the USAF and RAAF for heroism under fire in support of ground troops.

Post-military, Matt excelled in the world of air racing, becoming the reigning Red Bull Air Race World Champion and the most successful race pilot in the modern era, with seven wins and 25 podiums to his name.

Matt Hall Racing serves as the primary charitable partner to Wings4Kidz, providing air transport for children in regional communities for medical appointments. Additionally, the business supports numerous charitable causes, veterans’ causes, schools, grass-roots aviation, and fundraising events each year, while also offering flights and exhibitions out of Lake Macquarie.

We asked Matt a few questions about his passion for Lake Macquarie.

Why do you love doing what you do in Lake Macquarie?

I was a Lake Mac resident throughout my entire school life, starting in Swansea then Mandalong and Morisset. I spent my spare time either flying from Aeropelican and Avondale airport or water skiing on Lake Macquarie. I’m now back home at Coal Point, an owner of the old Aeropelican airport, and I spend as much time on the lake as possible, whether it's in boats, stand-up paddles, or winging. There is nothing like being in and around the lake, the beaches, the Watagans. Being able to represent the city and its assets is a privilege.

Why do you love living in Lake Macquarie?

I love living in Lake Macquarie because of the environment. The weather is generally stable, the lake is beautiful, the activities are numerous.

What are some hidden gems or lesser-known perks about living in Lake Macquarie that you think more people should know about?

I believe most people are unaware of the Watagans and the beauty they hold. Waterfalls, nature walks, lookouts. I grew up exploring the trails while living in Mandalong.

Check out Matt Hall Racing, Red Bull Aerobatic Experiences that fly out of Lake Macquarie Airport too!

Each year we celebrate unsung heroes from our community that help make our city a great place to live.
