The 2.5km Speers Point to Glendale shared pathway connects Speers Point Park to the Tramway Track at Glendale, following the scenic Cockle Creek. The path includes bench seating and water stations. The 3.9km Tramway Track connects Glendale to Wallsend, connecting cyclists in Lake Macquarie to bike routes that can take them to suburbs in Newcastle and community facilities such as the University of Newcastle. The track starts at the Glendale TAFE.
The path has a fascinating past, running along the former Tramway Track between Speers Point and Wallsend. The Tramway Track was part of a larger network of steam tramways that served the Newcastle area. The Speers Point line opened in 1912 and closed in 1930. Now a shared path, the Tramway Track provides a shaded, gentle gradient perfect of a leisurely ride or walk.
The path is part of the Speers Point to Newcastle R5 Regional Cycleway, which forms part of the Greater Newcastle Principal Bicycle Network.
