Property inspections for priority weeds

We undertake routine property inspections on all land throughout the city to identify priority weed infestations and manage their growth. We always encourage property owners and occupiers to be in attendance during an inspection, this way we can answer any questions you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my property being inspected for priority weeds?

Council has a legislative requirement under the Biosecurity Act 2015 to inspect lands for high-risk weeds and minimise the impact they have on the economy, environment, and community.

If you receive notification of a property inspection, it is likely that a priority weed has been found in your area and we are working to determine the spread of the infestation to protect surrounding properties. By doing this, we can work with land managers to help implement the appropriate control measures.

Can I be present during the inspection?

Yes. Wherever possible, we encourage you or your representative be present for the inspection. We are happy to reschedule the inspection at a mutually agreed time to ensure your attendance.

How long will the inspection take?

This depends on numerous factors including the size and accessibility of the property. A standard residential property should take no longer than 15 minutes, whereas a rural property could take over an hour to inspect.

What parts of my property will be inspected?

The inspection will not occur on any part of the property used for residential purposes; however, the Inspecting Officer is required to access areas of the property outside of any dwellings, including lawns and gardens.

What happens if I have priority weeds growing on my property?

If priority weeds are found on your property during the inspection, we will send you a report containing information about the weed and your obligation as a land manager to implement adequate control measures to meet biosecurity requirements.

We will always strive to work with you to ensure you have all the information and advice required to be confident in managing priority weeds.
