Community gardens

Community gardens provide a space to grow fresh organic produce. They also support local food production, healthy living and improve social wellbeing in the local community.

There are a number of established community gardens around Lake Mac. Take a look at the list below for more details about getting involved with your local community garden.

Community gardens in Lake Macquarie

Dudley Community Garden

The Dudley Community Garden project aims to grow and maintain a food producing community garden in the Dudley areas that is open and accessible to the community

Edgeworth Community Garden

Edgeworth Community Garden is a place to connect with the community in a green space to learn and grow.

Located on the grounds of Wangi Uniting Church, French Road Community Garden is the newest community garden in Lake Mac. Join the group as they establish this new community space. Working bees are 9-11am on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Habitat in Harmony Community Garden

Habitat in Harmony is a community run garden located at Belmont Neighbourhood Centre. People of all ages are welcome to come and visit the garden and join us in growing fresh organic produce. The Community Garden is here for you to enjoy!

Holmesville Community Garden

Enjoy gardening with friends, growing your own fresh, healthy produce and meeting other like-minded locals at the Holmesville Community Garden

Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre, umali barai-ku

A place 'to do for the earth', the Landcare and Sustainable Living Centre, umali barai-ku, is a one-stop shop where our Lake Macquarie community can learn more about sustainability and caring for the environment.

Survivor's R Us Cardiff Community Gardens

Survivor's R Us Inc. is a non judgemental not-for-profit charity assisting those in our community who need help. Garden volunteers are wanted to assist to plan, manage, set up and tend the new and existing community gardens.

Toronto Community Hub Garden

A small community garden based at the Toronto Community Centenary Hub. The aim of the space is to develop a backyard garden which can both be a place of pleasure and production on a small scale.
Join the garden working bees on Wednesday from 3pm and Saturday from 9.30am.

Warners Bay Community Garden

Located in Bunya Park, this community garden offers many activities to participate in, including seedling growing, composting, garden planning, events and regular social catch-ups over morning tea

Start a community garden

Step 1.Talk to your community

Find out how much support there is for a community garden in your proposed area.

Step 2.Form a group

It takes an enthusiastic and committed group to establish a community garden.

Step 3.Find a patch of land

Step 4.Complete an Expression of Interest form

Complete the EoI form at the bottom of this page, with the initial details of your proposed garden and group.

Step 5.Application form

If your EoI application is approved, a Council staff member can assist with your official application form. The application process will require consultation with the local community, a site visit, a concept plan for the garden and a management plan for the garden group.

Step 6.Grow

Once the application form has been approved, you are able to start work on your community garden. Council can assist in the promotion of your community garden group and its activities.
